SUMMARY

The goals of the Social Emotional Learning Specialist (SEL Specialist) are to help children build skills in the areas of mindfulness, emotional regulation, distress tolerance and social interactions. The SEL Specialist creates and facilitatesinteractive group lessons to help teach social and emotional skills at Girls Inc. after school program locations.  The Social Emotional Learning Specialist will work as a team member with other after school program staff, by providing consultation and training as needed to improve the team's skill set and generalize interventions across all classes in the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates and facilitates age appropriate psychoeducational group lessons for youth attending after school program. Topics including but not limited to:

  • responsibility, 

  • goal setting, 

  • self-control,

  • self esteem

  • Coping skills,

  • Stress tolerance

  • Positive peer interactions

  • Takes daily attendance of students attending group

  • Interacts positively with children while attending group

  • Turns in written lesson plans for review on a weekly basis

  • Observes other after school program staff as they facilitate lessons

  • Provides training and guidance for handling behavioral problems that arise in the classroom

  • Provide training on social emotional or mental health topics when requested

  • Work as a positive team member supporting the team's mission and goals, consistently working in a trusting and cooperative manner with fellow team members and supporting the team's common operating approach.?

  • Accepts professional responsibility and serves as a role model for positive, pro-social behavior; modeling respect, responsibility, integrity, empathy, impulse control, emotional self-awareness, and professional boundaries.?

  • Demonstrates commitment to professional growth by attending all required meetings, trainings and organizational trainings.???

  • Candidate will have to successfully complete and maintain certification of ESPI training. ESPI techniques are only used in compliance with Laurel Life policy and procedure and within guidelines established by third-party experts in the proper and legal use of ESPI.

  • Maintain an active valid driver's license issued by state in which they reside and must immediately notify their supervisor or Human Resources if their license is suspended or revoked for any reason.

  • May perform other special projects or duties as requested.

SKILLS

Possess specific expertise in behavior management and clinical interventions. Good interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to develop effective and meaningful relationships with clients.?Must be able to remain calm in a crisis situation, identify underlying causes of problem situations, resolve conflicts, and de-escalate potentially explosive situations. Must be a team player.

EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE BACKGROUND

Have at least 1 year of experience in providing direct services to children, youth or young adults and a graduate degree in psychology, social work, education, or counseling from a college or university accredited by an agency recognized by US Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education or have an equivalent degree from a foreign college or university.

The Social Emotional Learning Specialistwill have an updated Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance, Act 34 Criminal Record Check, FBI Criminal Background Check, and Act 31 CPSL Mandated Reporter Training prior to working alone with a child.

*Programs in the state of Maryland may have additional clearance requirements. 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work settings can include, but are not limited to, school buildings, community, and activity centers.Working conditions during the summer program and recreational programs may involve physical activities.?Evening hours are required during school year.  Clientele may at times be verbally or physically abusive.??
